Teaching & Learning Evaluation for This Semester Ends

Published on 25 January 2010

The window has been closed for 2009-2010 semester 1 term-end Teaching & Learning Evaluation (TLE) yesterday, with 11,778 questionnaires filled out, accounting for 42.9% of all subject enrolments.  A report will be conducted  by Academic Registry based on the evaluation and analysis of this survey.

TLE is launched on line at the end of each semester for students to express their comments and suggestions about teaching and learning freely and anonymously. The evaluation questionnaire is composed of three parts: teaching effectiveness, attainment of intended learning outcomes and general comments.

The objectives of the TLE are to allow students to reflect on the attainment of the intended learning outcomes after the term of study; and provide instructors with students' feedback on the teaching of the subject discipline, so that teaching quality can be continuously improved.

The College considers the TLE valuable to the institution and thus the results are seriously taken into account by instructors, Programme Coordinators, Deans/Directors and the top college management. The overall participation rate for the two semesters in 2008-2009 academic year was 38.56% and 36.09% of all subject enrolments, respectively. The response rate was considered satisfactory given the voluntary nature of the survey. In view of the students' comments, the College run regular workshops and hold seminars on pedagogy for UIC staff to enhance their skills in teaching.

Some students admit they don't spend much time to finish the questionnaire during the preparation for final examination. Leoric, a Junior from Accounting said that he evaluated eight staff members who taught him in the last academic year although he doesn't think it would do much help to students as they have already finished the courses. He suggests that the College pays more attention to the midterm evaluation to increase the possibility of improved teaching quality in the second half of the semester.

The on-line TLE forms one component of the College's comprehensive quality assurance system in ensuring teaching effectiveness and student learning. Teachers are advised to do a pen-and-pencil midterm evaluation of their teaching; deans and programme coordinators may do a peer observation of their colleagues' teaching; and, finally, at any point of time, students can complain/make suggestions for improvement to the College about their teachers' performance. All these are part of the T&L evaluation measures, which are required by Hong Kong Baptist University in order to ensure that the degrees received by UIC students are comparable to those received by students in Hong Kong in terms of quality.
