This summer
UIC is sending a total of 87 students to four colleges in Minnesota. The first group, composed of 19
students, arrived safely on campus at Gustavus
Adolphus College
in St. Peter, Minnesota, on June 25. The students were
greeted initially at the airport in Minneapolis,
Minnesota by Carolyn O'Grady,
Director of Gustavus's International Education Office. Ms. O'Grady then
escorted the group by bus and an hour and a half trip to St. Peter, a small but
scenic town located about 100kilometers southwest of Minneapolis.
Arriving on campus at Gustavus, the students were very excited to be at their
destination after two long international flights! They had an orientation
briefing, followed by a guided tour of the campus, which is located on a hill
overlooking the Minnesota River.
Classes started the very next morning, and the enthusiastic UIC students had their
first experience in an American-style classroom, with lecturers who emphasized
interaction between teachers and students.
On their third day at the college, Todd Prafke, city administrator of St.
Peter, welcomed the UIC students, gave them a personal tour of the city,
including one of its sixteen parks, and explained how the city administration
worked. He also announced that the students had been awarded the title of
"honorary citizens" of the city of St. Peter. Later, Ed Lee, a reporter from the
"St. Peter Herald", welcomed and interviewed the group.
Over the next month, the UIC students will have a combination of classroom
lectures and cultural activities, an experience which should improve their
English, expand their knowledge of international affairs, and provide them with
lasting memories of their visit to the United States.
