On September 16th, a preliminary round of the CCTV Cup English Speech Competition was held in the multi-function lecture hall at UIC. Twenty-three year-two and year-three students showed respectively high English proficiency and charisma in the competition.
Erin, a year-two student majoring in International Journalism came in the first place while Shirley, a year-two student majoring in Food Science was second to her. Another two year-two students: Helen and Bessie, majoring in International Journalism both ranked third. These four students will receive training in English speech by the English Language Center and one of them will participate in the CCTV Cup English Speech Competition semifinal at the provincial level in the coming October.
During the competition, each competitor received an impromptu topic 10 minutes before delivering a 2-minute speech on the topic. Judges appraised the competitors' performances by content, language, skill and time control.
