UIC Student Career Expo Held Successfully

The UIC Student Career Expo was successfully held on Jan 13 at UIC campus. nearly 30 famous companies including A.S. Watsons, Amway (China) Co. Ltd., Zhuhai International Circuit Ltd participated and interviewed UIC students for internships and placements. This career expo was organized by UIC and sponsored by Hong Kong Institute of Human Resources Management and Zhuhai Gaoxin District Human Resources Services Center.

Mr. Weymond Lam gave a speech

In the opening ceremony, Mr. Weymond Lam, council member of Kong Institute of Human Resources Management delivered a career talk titled "Here I Come.... World". Mr. Lam encouraged UIC students to take a good attitude toward working. He said students should learn to earn what they desire, instead of taking them for granted. Before his talk, Prof. Stella Cho,UIC student career development committee chairman gave an welcoming  speech. Vice President of UIC Prof S.Y. Zee and Associate Vice President Dr. Wendy Chan later introduced UIC to representatives of the participating companies. The UIC SIFE team members also presented their project, which left a very good impression.

Exhibition

The career exhibition and interview took place in the afternoon. The companies interviewed properly dressed UIC students, with hundreds of internship and placement opportunities in offer, among which the Shenzhen Zhongan Credit Group Co. Ltd. was offering 100 positions, and A.S Watsons was recruiting 45 trainees.

Interview

The representatives of the participating companies found UIC students impressive, and commended this Expo. Mr. Wang Yibing, manager of Zhuhai Fdays Computer system Co.Ltd said: "I had attended many job fairs in China, but a career expo like this was something I had never experience before. The presentations in the morning acquainted me with the UIC students and the organization of the exhibition this afternoon also meets our demand of meeting students and promoting our company. I believe this pattern of career expo will soon be imitated by other universities."

Ms. Angela Lau, Human Resource and Administration Manager of Dongguan Luen Thai Garment Co. Ltd. said: "The UIC students are impressive, outstanding, and remarkable. I saw them present the SIFE project, they doesn't look like students, but professionals. I am surprised, I didn't expect this out of students." She added:"UIC students have a very global vision, so wiling to learn. The Expo would benefit the students because talking to someone who are already in the work force will help them update their mindset, and be more ready to the work after graduation." She suggested the students do a little market research and find out what they want and they need, so that they won't be puzzled after graduation.

The students generally found the career expo beneficial in that they could learn what to prepare for the work force, it was a very good opportunity for them to practice their interview skills and professional abilities. Many of the student found English proficiency an advantage of UIC students.

Very kindly, the companies presentatives also provided valuable advice for this Expo, such as more space in-between the interviewer and interviewee to reduce the nervousness of students, more promotion for this activity to draw more students, and if possible, more multimedia equipments like projectors to show company profiles. They also advised the students to enrich their resumes and show confidence in front of the interviewers. Both companies and students hope that UIC will organize more career expos in the future.
