On December 23rd, Gaoyuan, Xieche, Luo Zhuoheng and Ouyang Fangxing were invited back to UIC for an experience sharing by UIC Four-Point Education Office. Graduated from UIC, they are now involved in post-graduate programs in Hong Kong universities. During the forum, they briefed students on preparations for study, procedures one must go through, campus life in Hong Kong and many other aspects.
Prepare Profile in Advance
Gaoyuan, a student of 2005 majored in Environmental Science, is now studying Environmental Science and Engineering in Hong Kong Polytechnic University. When asked why she chose further education instead of job hunting, she attributed her decision to her parents' and teachers' support. She advised that students who intended for graduate study in Hong Kong should get their profiles prepared in advance. It was known that she had been collecting personal information since September 2008 and she was busy filling out application forms, sorting out information including recommendation forms from professors and upload/ing personal information in December. She mentioned that, the UIC teaching model had given her an advantage to adapt to Hong Kong style education because she could avoid wasting time adapting to the whole-English environment.
Take Advantage of TOEFL And IELTS Scores
Xieche, a student of 2005 majored in Finance, is now studying MBA in Hong Kong Baptist University. He advised that students should make reasonable decisions based on personal professions when choosing universities. He indicated that, MBA courses enriched his knowledge of business administration, which would pave a way for his future career. He also emphasized that, TOEFL and IELTS scores are still important through they are not required by HKBU when applying for post-graduate programs, but those who have good IELTS and TOEFL scores would have an advantage over those that don't have.
Consider Individual Interest when choosing specializations
Luo Zhuoheng made it successful to develop her own interest in study programs. Previously she majored in Applied Finance and she is studying Applied Sociology in the City University of Hong Kong now. She laid much emphasis on personal interest which led to possible academic success. She reminded students of difficulties in changing majors which meant more time needed to catch up with the course schedule. Referring to qualification of college application, she made herself an example of successfully applying for City University of Hong Kong with CET6 score instead of TOEFL and IELTS scores.
Recommendation Forms Are Important But Not Decisive.
Ouyang Fangxing, a student of 2005 majoring in Statistics, is now studying Business Statistics and Operational Research in Hong Kong Baptist University. He said, Statistics in Hong Kong University was second to none in Asia, as a consequence, only approximately 20 students could gain entrance. He proposed that blind attempts should be avoided otherwise entry fee would not pay off. Students with GPA above 3.4 were advised to apply for Statistics in Chinese University of Hong Kong. He also emphasized that, recommendation forms could make a difference but could not tip the balance. He added, what he was studying was a joint program launched by Hong Kong Baptist University and University of Kent Canterbury. His current courses focused on Business Basic Statistics and extended to new knowledge. However, he still suggested students majoring in Applied Economics and Finance have a try.
The communication conference won positive feedbacks from students present. Gan Hongyin from Four-Point Education Office said, there will be more similar activities in the future. He added that, all the activities aimed at reducing students' frustration and bewilderment in their life time with the help of schoolfellows. He hoped that schoolfellows could keep in touch with UIC and give attention to what UIC is experiencing over time.
