The national recruitment of volunteer teachers commenced in May 2010, and has recruited over 5000 volunteers to serve in poverty stricken areas in Guangxi, Inner-Mongolia, Guizhou, Yunnan, etc.

During the qualification interview held in Shenzhen on July 25, 2010, Huang Guimei impressed the judges with her confident speech in English and nice black-board writing skills. She told the press about her college life at UIC, which was described as being "different from students from other Mainland universities" by a journalist from the Shenzhen Commercial Daily.

Huang Guimei recalled her experience of joining the Yuzhu Mountain Climbing Programme in Qinghai and Tibet, which was organized by UIC's Whole Person Education Office in 2007. During the programme, they had to overcome many difficulties to reach the 6178 meter peak of the mountain, a wolf coming into their campsite being one of the most dangerous situations. She learned a lot from such experiences. "Although I haven't been a professional English teacher, I have the confidence to teach the kids," said Huang Guimei.

In spite of the high salaries for English teachers in Shenzhen, Huang Guimei's hometown, her mother also supported her decision and commended UIC's education.
