WPE Summer Programs Sharing Party was held at B202 on September 28. The sharing was hosted by Associate Director of WPEO Mr. Thomas Kilian, and attended by around 80 students and 20 teachers and coaches of WPE. Students shared their experience of participating in these programmes, namely, Silk Road Programme, Qinghai Environmental Awareness Tour, Cambodia Voluntary Service and Europe Sport Culture Tour.
105 UIC students and 8 EDTC coaches participated in the Silk Road Programme, which went across 5 provinces and autonomous regions in Northwest China. Their activities included hiking, climbing mountains, camping, visiting historical places of interest, etc. They have been to the Qinghai Lake, Jia Yu Guan-the west end of the Great Wall, Yellow River, etc. With a total travel distance of over 4500km and a time period of 20 days, students gained experience at a much smaller scale in what the original Silk Road merchants suffered and rejoiced.
The Environmental Awareness Tour in Qinghai investigated the local antelope species and found they were still in danger from wolves, hunters and bad environment. People tried to set up feeding points and re-filtered water supply in the reservation area. It brought students to respect each other more and all lives on the Earth.
The Europe Sport Culture Programme experienced popular sports in Europe like fencing, rafting, football, etc. Besides, they also enjoyed home-stay in different families and visited a lot of scenic and cultural spots, such as the Louvre Museum, triumphal arch, etc.
During the voluntary tour in Cambodia, UIC students taught orphans and poor children language, arts, sciences, etc. According to their report, the greatest difficulties were age gap and attention catching. The pupils aged from 3 to18. Besides, their language was totally different from Chinese and English. A great deal of communication needed to be done by facial expression and gesture. However, our UIC students managed to teach them and established good relations with them.
During the sharing, students showed a lot of nice photos and a video clip about their trip. There will be a photo exhibition on WPE summer programmes opening on 11 October on the Second Floor of the Exhibition Hall. All are welcome!
