The sought-after admission reform is accomplished beyond expectation

Published on 8 August 2013

UIC has successfully completed its newly-reformed admission policy, and has developed a Comprehensive Evaluation System for student recruitment in Guangdong Province.

Under this new admission system, a total of 540 eligible Guangdong students have been accepted, including 267 students in sciences and 273 in arts. This exceeds the planned quota by 10 students, according to Prof. Zhang Genfa, Registrar of UIC. Excluding Guangdong, UIC has enrolled another 769 students with batch one  scores from the National College Entrance Examination (also known as the Gaokao).

The admission reform in Guangdong aims to supplant the present practice of using the National College Entrance Examination scores as the only evaluative criterion, and thus give more attention to the students’ overall performance during senior high school study. The College has been gravitating toward admitting more students who are suited to receiving and excelling with a Liberal Arts Education and Whole Person Education.

If you missed the announcement, UIC has begun using a new Comprehensive Evaluation System, in which the results of the National College Entrance Examination makes up 60% of the total score, an admission test conducted by UIC makes an additional 30% and the senior high school proficiency test gives the final 10%.

Prof. Zhang Genfa said UIC retained the principles of fairness and transparency throughout the admission work with broad support from the educational authorities and many high schools, even though the new admission scheme is somewhat more complex than before.

He also revealed that the time to broadcast the news of the admission reform was too close to the admissions test, and thus many potential candidates lost the opportunity to test for entry to UIC. The admissions planning will be improved in the future, based on the lessons that were learned this year, he added.
