Published on 20 May 2025

The original five-act campus musical, Liberal Arts Romance, was successfully staged at BNBU's Mr & Mrs Ching-Fai Ng Performance Theatre on 14 May 2025, as part of the university's 20th anniversary celebrations, attracting a large audience on campus.

The musical tells the growth story of four BNBU students from different backgrounds, who spend their four years at the university guided by the spirit of liberal arts education.

Structured with five themes—Approaching Liberal Arts, Understanding Liberal Arts, Experiencing Liberal Arts, Practising Liberal Arts, and Promoting Liberal Arts—the musical showcases the unique features of BNBU's community, including the Meal-with-Your-Professor programme, summer programmes, graduation ceremony, and more.

BNBU President Prof Chen Zhi watched the musical together with students. He congratulated the team on its success and praised the cast and crew for their outstanding work.

The audience were moved by the show. One viewer commented, "This drama had all the essential elements of a great production—heartfelt storytelling, compelling characters, and a powerful message. The story of Yang Jie, the Beichuan orphan who dedicated herself to volunteer work in Qingyuan, truly touched my soul."

With over 60 students from various departments across BNBU participating, the musical was written and produced by Ms Wang Jie, Associate Department Head of the Music Department of BNBU's School of Culture and Creativity, who also served as the music director. The production also benefited from professional guidance by choreographer Mr Ricky Tong, and theatre instructor Mr Han Xiao from Beijing Normal University at Zhuhai.
