Published on 13 September 2021

As the new academic year starts, UIC's freshmen are welcomed to the campus while its graduates are ready to look back and share their college life.

Fu Yinong

Public Relations and Advertising (PRA) graduate

Admitted to the MSc in International Public Policy at University College London (UCL)

Fu Yinong, who won an award in the 2021 SODiC Competition, considers having a clear university development path as significant. During his four-year college life, he developed his logical thinking skills to summarise and combine the knowledge from different courses. He also suggested that first-year students cultivate learning ability in the following four years. In this way, they would be more prepared to walk further and realise various possibilities.

According to Fu Yinong, UIC provides an international atmosphere and presents the advantages of its liberal arts and whole-person education. Students are supposed to become internationally competitive here by developing English capabilities and integrating the resources.

Yu Yihang

Financial Mathematics (FM) graduate

Admitted to the MSc in Financial Mathematics at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

Yu Yihang, a three-year First-class Award and one-year Second-class Award winner, considers UIC a platform for students to develop and get to know themselves while accessing knowledge. He was good at integrating the learning resources from UIC and had developed his own learning methods.

When preparing for the first presentation as a first-year student, Yihang asked English Language Centre (ELC) for help. He got many practical suggestions from ELC teachers, which made him confident to stand and present during classes.

Another key to Yihang's getting excellent academic performance was suitable learning methods. Yihang followed the course instructors in class and kept the habit of reviewing after each class. When there came an examination of a course with many things to memorise, he used to summarise a checklist with knowledge points and plan for the review process. As a result, he found himself developed a lot compared with the one stepping into UIC four years ago.

Hu Dongxue

Management of Human Resources (MHR) graduate

Admitted to the MSc in Management at the University of Warwick

Hu Dongxue planned for her further development when getting into UIC for the first year. According to her, internship experiences are essential for those who plan to get into the job market after graduation. If planning for further study, students are recommended to make efforts on academic work of UIC and other examinations such as IELTS, GMATS, GRE. Then, choosing to work or apply for a master's degree, students are suggested to find their life goals through practical experiences.

Hu Dongxue said it was not easy to handle academic work and internship experiences at the same time. Besides, she needed to spend more time and effort on academic work since she transferred into the MHR programme in the second year. Indeed, her skills in time and pressure management developed in this process.

At the end of her sharing, she said getting into university means one should gain knowledge proactively. As a result of this mindset, she got academic honour with her paper published in an Asian academic forum.

Chen Keren

Media Arts and Design (MAD) graduate

Admitted to the MSc in Modern and Contemporary Art: History, Curating and Criticism at The University of Edinburgh

According to Keren, life is limited, but what we can do is not. Keren suggests that students should not be afraid of failure; keep trying and looking for what they genuinely love.

Keren took part in various activities to develop her skills out of the study, including whole-person programmes, elective courses, summer programmes. In addition, she performed as a member of UICO in Zhuhai Grand Theatre.

In addition, she participated in summer programmes launched by UIC. She visited Malaysia as a volunteer and participated in a summer arts programme at Bauhaus University, Germany. In this process, she gradually found her life goal and planned for her second master's degree in arts education.
