UIC held its 2nd Graduating Ceremony at the Campus Cultural Square on May 8th with hundreds of guests, teachers, students and parents attending the ceremony. Among the 789 graduating students, lots of them have obtained employment from different companies such as Deloitte, Bank of China and Guangdong TV. In addition, many other students have realized their dreams of further studying in famous universities including Imperial College, University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist University, leaving only a few still considering their next move.
The whole ceremony started with UIC Academic Registrar Prof. Genfa Zhang's opening speech. Graduates in divergent majors stepped up onto the platform to receive mementos presented by EVP Prof. S.T. Kwok and souvenirs presented by VP Prof. S.Y. Zee, Prof. Stella Cho, Dean of DBM or Prof. Jeff Wilkinson, Acting Dean of DHSS.
After the presentation of mementos and souvenirs, President C.F. Ng delivered an address, during which he said, "The world today is fast changing. On the one hand, life-long learning is a must if you want to keep yourself updated with the world. On the other, knowledge alone will not be adequate for you to handle your challenges in the future. As a graduate of UIC, you are expected to showcase, the outcome of our whole person education which will sure be a positive asset for you no matter whether you will embark on your career soon or continue your academic endeavors."
Receiving interview, President C.F. Ng said that he was very pleased to witness the students' graduation. He believed that they would be able to obtain preferable jobs compared to last year, since they had better conditions. President C.F. Ng also emphasized that UIC is still improving day by day. In the future, two more majors will be established and other achievements in scientific research will be gained.
Distinguished guests spoke highly about UIC's second graduating class. The headmaster of BNU Zhuhai Campus, Prof. Guangju Chen, said that he highly appreciated the teaching philosophy of UIC which focused on tightly associating university, society and parents with students. Moreover, he proposed having more activities between BNU and UIC in order to better understand each other. Associate Vice President and Dean of Graduate School of Hong Kong Baptist University Prof. Tang Tao said UIC stduents, who were educated in a diverse cultural environment and had developed international visions, had made a good impression on him. Prof. Tang said he felt UIC students had a very strong identification towards their college, and were supportive to the activities held by the college.
The ceremony was also a special occasion for the parents of the graduates. Some parents came a long way from other places to attend the ceremony. Talking about her daughter's graudation, the mother of He Yun, graduate of Finance couldn't cover her excitement. She said the global-local educational model of UIC was very helpful towards cultivating her daughter's comprehensive ability, especial English skills. She was very grateful to UIC. Mr. Zhang, a parent came from Zhejiang province said he was pleased to see the growth of his son. “UIC taught my son a lot, no matter in studying or in social behavior”, said Mr. Zhang. Some other parents expressed the intention to send their children to UIC to study.
The graduating students will formally receive their degrees at the Commencement Ceremony at HKBU which is scheduled in November 2010.
