Human Resources Management in Post-Crisis Period

On May 27th, 2010 Human Resources Forum themed "Human Resources Management in Post-Crisis Period" was held in UIC. Distinguished guests delivered speeches in relevant topics. Luo Jing, a famous hostess from Zhuhai Radio Station, hosted the forum. HR representatives from over 50 Zhuhai corporations attended the forum.

UIC Associate Vice President Dr. Wendy Chan, Dean of Division of Business and Management Prof. Stella Cho delivered opening and welcoming speeches respectively.

Dr. Herman Tan, Associate Professor of UIC Management of Human Resources Program, gave a speech entitled "How to Establish a Flexible Employment System", in which he emphasized its role in retaining core employees. With the flexible pay system in Singapore as example, he gave detailed introduction on the concept of Rational Pay Rise. He said, pays could be categorized into fixed pay and variable pay, and a rise or fall in the latter could lower the overall labor cost within the psychological accptance of employees during the crisis period.

Senior Human Resources Manager of Zhuhai Philips Household Appliances Mr. Xie Xiaomeng thought that the coexistence of economic recovery and crisis brought opportunities as well as challenges in the field of corporate human resources. He added that corporations could see an increase in value if appropriate investment was put into human capital. He considered university students as best potential investees because they were virgin in work experience and open to corporate cultures.

Dr. Kevin Zhen, Director of Admission and Career Development Office, expatiated upon the topic of team building under a multi-culture background. He said that insufficiency of international talents posed obstacles to Chinese enterprises in expanding business in the global market. He also considered that many universities in China regarded whole English teaching as international education, while ignored the role of experience. UIC had taken distinctive educational approaches in this field, in which Whole Person Education attempt to train talents with local culture and global perspectives.

Mr. Weymond Lam, council member of Kong Institute of Human Resources Management shared his experiences of working for corporations with different cultural backgrounds. He thought that family-style management was a common practice in eastern corporations, while western corporations preferred democracy. Working in corporations with different cultures, co-adaptation and communication could avoid a lot of unnecessary troubles.

In the end of the theme speeches, UIC SIFE representatives made a demonstration of their national award winning projects: EOP (Economic Opportunity Program) and Unilever College Student Successful Skills Program. Senior Human Resources Manager of Zhuhai Philips Household Appliances Mr. Xie Xiaomeng showed great appreciation for their excellent performance, which was considered to be professional level.

Mr. Luo Wen made a closing speech

Secretary for Service Center of Zhuhai Human Resources Development Mr. Luo Wen spoke highly of the forum and appealed for positive interactive mechanisms and channels through which corporations could work with the center to deal with human resource management in the Post-Crisis Period.
