Organized by the English Language Center (ELC), UIC's CCTV Cup English Speaking Preliminary Contest was held May 12th, in the room B202. Around 18 students from different majors joined this competition. Only one candidate would be able to participate in the quarter-final held in Guangzhou. The final result would be posted on the ELC website.
The whole activity began with ELC teacher Vicki Steven's opening speech. During the competition, the participants gave a two-minute speech on a given topic. They had 10 minutes to prepare. The topics entailed many areas. For example, the topic "Imagine your holiday travel was affected by the ash from a volcano. What would you do?" involved current affairs. Each student's performance was judged by five ELC teachers: Bruce Destefano, John Halstead, Michelle Liu, Peter Smith and Vicki Steven (alphabetical order). Receiving interview, one of the five judges, John Halstead, said: "Everyone did a good job, but there is still room for them to improve. I think they are just a bit nervous, so they failed in showing confidence and enthusiasm. Having more body language and eye contact will be much better. "
