Dr. Liu Zhan, professor of the Department of Physical Education and Health Education, Springfield College, gave a lecture at UIC on the topic “Health Crisis in China: Is China following the USA’s example?” on 15th March, 2011.
Dr. Liu proposed that to be healthy and have longevity was a part of basic human rights that no one can infringe. He discussed the serious health conditions in current China, especially the high occurrence of death among social elites because of people’s ignorance of health knowledge, including the awareness of self-health protection and exercises.
Then he introduced the global health development in the 21st century. He mentioned that after decades of economic development, China’s financial strength has been well upgraded; however when it comes to the current state of medical care and national physical quality, the country is still facing a very hard situation. Numerous facts and statistics show that China is probably following the USA’s example on the disease trend, which is not positive and should be changed with everyone’s efforts.
Besides, Dr. Liu put forwarded six new elements that a healthy person should hold, namely: Body, Psychology, Environment, Spirit, Social Network and Intellectuality. Dr. Liu also recommended a series of basic skills on exercising and body-shaping to the audiences.
“Everybody is equal before death, no one has the privilege. One man who is financially wealthy can only buy a good doctor but never a healthy body.” said Dr. Liu. To protect the greatest wealth: HEALTH, we should be aware from now on.
