Winning all its games against the other three teams in the same pool of the national competition held in Shenzhen on 18-19 May, UIC’s newly-established 25 member frisbee team took pride in their performance.

Competing against professional teams, such as the Hong Kong Frisbee Team, and amateur teams, like Changsha City B Frisbee Team, UIC-7 eventually ranked tenth in the 2013 China Ultimate Frisbee Open.

“Our team has only been formally established for one year,” said Jian QIU, the captain of UIC-7. “Thus, this has been our best competition ranking so far.”

The coach of UIC-7, Ms. Yishan Tang from the Whole Person Education Office, believed that although UIC-7 did not perform outstandingly against the skilled, professional teams in the competition, the team’s attendance in the Open brought something home.

“These kids are like sponges; they’re really taking everything in – from the formation, to the methods the professional teams use,” said Tang.

“This competition has really changed how we see frisbee as a whole,” said UIC-7 member Melanie Miao. “Now, we want to work even harder in hopes of getting even better results in years to come.”
