New students begin university life

UIC welcomed a total of approximately 1,300 freshmen from mainland China, Hong Kong, South Korea and the US on 30 August for its new academic year. These new students arrived early in the morning at the Innovative Education Hall, UIC’s off-campus accommodation.

A total of 550 new students were enrolled via an innovative Comprehensive Evaluation System in Guangdong Province. Those from other provinces had to get Band One (first class) scores on the National College Entrance Examination.

More than 90% of new students had registered in advance via a new online system. They completed all the registration procedures faster than ever and everything went smoothly on the registration day.

The new students were required register independently, while their parents waited in a special area.

Recommended by her senior high school teacher, Zhang Qi, from Guizhou, matriculated in the Financial Mathematics Programme at UIC. She understood UIC’s unique education philosophy and looked forward to the teaching and learning culture she believes will benefit her pursuit of further overseas study.

Different from many fellows who were escorted by their family, Zhao Minyan came all the way alone from Qingdao. She is interested in language and thus opted for the Teaching English as a Second Language Programme. She expects a university life filled with a variety of experiences.

Guo Jian graduated from Hong Kong’s SKH All Saints’ Middle School and was recruited by the School Principal’s Nomination Scheme for Hong Kong and Macao students. Students enrolled in this way are awarded bursaries so they only have to pay half the tuition fee.

UIC President Prof Ng Ching-Fai answered questions on 31 August at the Parents Forum, an event organised by Four-Point Education, which links the college, the students, the parents and society. Over 800 parents participated in the Forum to acquaint themselves with the college. Later, Deans, Associate Deans and Programme Directors of the three divisions interacted with the parents about each division in separate meetings.

At the High Table Dinner for new students’ parents on 31 August, parents wrote down their expectations of their children's education at UIC. The pieces of paper were then tucked into envelopes and locked in a box, which will be opened four years from now when their children graduate.

At the Inauguration Ceremonies on 2 September, President Prof Ng Ching-Fai encouraged the new students to establish and maintain “high standards of academic performances” and dare to choose their own life.

Prof Zee Sze Yong, Vice President (Academic), asked the new students to learn “how to communicate, how to improve their emotional intelligence, how to keep physically fit and how to learn” during their studies at UIC.

Vice President Prof Zhang Cong said the freshmen had begun a “journey of discovery” and encouraged them to fulfil and realise their dreams. “Make a difference to your own life and the lives of others,” he said.
