What can media communication be like during the big data era? Prof Huang Yu, Associate Vice President and Dean of School of Communication at Hong Kong Baptist University, gave a speech on such a topic at a High Table Dinner for students from UIC’s Division of Humanities and Social Sciences on 10 December.

Prof Huang emphasised the word “big” is relative, not absolute, and explained five main aspects of big data: the concept, the characters, the main technological methods, the applications, and the relationships with Communication students.

He noted that during the big data time, the biggest change is that people begin to give up desiring for causalities but turn to paying more attention to relevant relationships. It means that people just know what it is but needn’t know why it is so.

“The big data technology can improve decision-making in critical development areas in social life,” he said.
