UIC motto and anthem unveiled

UIC announced its motto “In knowledge and in deeds, unto the whole person” at its 10th Anniversary Celebration on 12 December. In addition, the UIC Choir presented the premiere of the college anthem.

The college motto represents the ideals, spirits and values that the UIC community upholds, according to UIC President Prof Ng Ching-Fai.

The Chinese Language and Culture Centre prepared its original Chinese version and Dean of the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences Prof Sung Mei-hwa translated it into English.

The Chinese lyrics of the college anthem were written by Director of the Chinese Language and Culture Centre Dr Wu Hongyu, before Prof Mildred Yang, Director of the General Education Office, created the English version and composed the melody.

Making the vocal harmony, Director of the Music Minor Programme Dr David Walters and Campus Music Activity Organiser Ms Sandra Lau presented the complete song in musical notation. Dr Walters also joined Prof Sung Mei-hwa to contribute their knowledge to the refinement of the English lyrics.

Thanks to the advice from Chairman of the UIC Council Prof Xu Jialu, the motto and the anthem were eventually approved by the council after almost one year’s creation.
