Over 60 academics attended the Ninth International Conference on the Frontiers of Information Technology, Application and Tools (FITAT) held at UIC between 1 and 3 April. They presented the latest developments in the field of information technology ranging from data mining algorithms to cloud computing.

These professionals, who mainly came from universities in China, Japan, South Korea, Mongolia, Thailand and Sudan, discussed how to apply information technology to diverse areas including robotics, education, medical sciences, driving, and high voltage circuit breakers. Some of the topics, “Anomaly Detection in Time-series Data” and “Energy Balance of Smart Grid”, interested a full house.
UIC Vice President Prof Zhang Cong welcomed the participants and said, “Although UIC is not considered an engineering school, concepts of information and communication technology for engineers are applicable to liberal arts students.”

Nipon Theera-Umpon, Associate Professor and Director of the Biomedical Engineering Center at Chiang Mai University, Thailand, gave a keynote speech on “Breast Abnormality Detection in Mammograms Using Fuzzy Inference Systems”. He introduced a few systems that could help spot microcalcification in mammograms at the earlier stages of breast cancer in order to reduce the mortality rate.
He explained how his research team utilized a type-1 Mamdani inference system between inside and outside boundaries in a microcalcification detection system and found both systems worked well. They further compared an interval type-2 fuzzy logic system with the former systems and got even better results.

The other keynote speeches of the conference were delivered by Goutam Chakraborty, Professor at Japan’s Iwate Prefectural University; Hongmin Cai, Associate Professor at South China University of Technology; Suvdaa Batsuuri, Associate Professor at the National University of Mongolia; and Sanghyuk Lee from Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University.
Organised by UIC, Chungbuk National University in South Korea and National University of Mongolia, the three-day conference consisted of technical presentations, panel discussions and posters. General chairs of the organising committee were Prof Stephen Chung, Dean of UIC’s Division of Science and Technology; Dr Weifeng Su, Director of UIC’s Computer Science and Technology Programme; and Prof Oyun-Erdene Namsrai from the National University of Mongolia.
