During the summer vacation, some UIC students took the initiative to attend short-term courses, work internships, provide voluntary services, and prepare for examinations. At the same time, some other students chose to stay at UIC. So what have they been doing?
From July to August 2021, UIC opened its first summer programmes on campus to meet students' requirements to acquire knowledge in different fields. There are 20 courses offered, including linear algebra, principles of accounting, and calculus. A total of 300 students chose to stay and earn credits.

Zheng Jiuchuan, a fourth-year Computer Science and Technology student, took two courses to earn credits for his minor studies in Applied Economics and hopes to improve his Cumulative Grade Point Average (cGPA). He found the classes not easy but rather enjoyable. In addition, the teacher has been accommodating when explaining complex concepts to them.

To meet students' needs, computer rooms are opened during this summer
To have a more fulfilling and balanced summer, students would also work out in the Sports Complex or go to the Sports Park after classes to relax and keep fit.

It may be a "lonely" time for students who stayed on campus as many of their friends and teachers are not here, but some enjoy focusing on their daily routine. Each year, many soon-to-be fourth-year students stayed at UIC to work on their Final Year Projects (FYPs).
This summer, Wei Xu from the Food Science and Technology Programme had planned a full schedule for himself. He goes to classes in the mornings and works in the lab during the afternoons. Wei Xu's FYP studies the varies of vitamin D content in various egg yolks under ultraviolet light. This is his first time doing independent experimental research. It trains his abilities to solve problems and helps him build a more assertive mentality.

The UIC Dragon Lion Dance Team achieved good results in the university students' 13th dragon and lion dance tournament. They won prizes in several categories, and the group's total score ranked six. The 20 team members trained very hard to achieve this result. From the beginning of summer vacation, they've been preparing for the competition.
Second-year Cinema and Television student, Tan Siyu, plays a "lion head" in the competition. She joined the team because of her strong interest, and her love towards the culture has accumulated as she practices the sport. She enjoyed the training this summer, and she felt like they were making the lion come to life.

All of the team members have trained intensively as Siyu did. Xu Zekun, the team leader who is also a third-year Financial Mathematics student, said that the training during summer is way more complicated than during the semesters. First, members need to coordinate with each other to do stunners. Then, they have to overcome mental obstacles and repeat the acts again and again to achieve perfection.
