Capping ceremony boosts students' sense of responsibility

The Fifth UIC Capping Ceremony was held on 3 May. The students attended the ceremony with their parents, teachers, as well as off-campus guests.

The ceremony

Three stages of the ceremony

To begin the capping ceremony, UIC's Yayue Orchestra presents a performance

The capping ceremony was divided into three parts. First, students wear three different costumes and express gratitude to parents, teachers and guests of honour respectively and receive other cappings from them.

For the first capping, parents wear Ji (Traditional Chinese hairpin) for females and Guan (Traditional Chinese cap) for males

Students wearing traditional Han clothing and parents put Ji (Traditional Chinese hairpin) for female students and Guan (Traditional Chinese cap) for male students during the first capping.

For the second capping, students wear clothes from the era of the Republic of China and received scarves representing good wishes from Prof Stella Cho and Ms Lilian Li.

Expectations from honoured guests

Ms Zhang Li encouraged students to think big and become global citizens.

Prof Chen Zhi expressed his hopes that students should be independent and learn how to spend time with themselves and plan for their future. He also encouraged students to seize opportunities for self-development, and break various challenges, striving for the better oneself, family, and society.

Words from parents

For some parent participants, it was profound to see the solemn capping ceremony and impressive to see the growth of their children.

Mr Huang, the parent of the student representative Huang Xuhua from Year 2 Finance Programme, said that the capping ceremony is a new start for Xuhua. He appreciates UIC for providing the opportunity for parents to witness the vital moment in children's life. In addition, the ceremony can raise students' awareness and responsibility of becoming adults.

Ms Huang, the parent of Wei Anqi from Year 3 Culture, Creativity and Management Programme, shared her understanding of UIC's Liberal Arts Education. She believes it encourages students to learn about both Western and Chinese traditional culture. Also, UIC's Liberal Arts Education broadens the student's global vision. She also presented her wishes to students.

Ms Wang, the parent of Ma Qianqi from the Year 3 Applied Translation Studies Programme, shared that she had witnessed the transformation of her child since he began college. She said that Qianqi has become more independent, raised the awareness of teamwork and developed leadership. She also said that the ceremony presents that the college attaches importance to Chinese traditional culture.

Third-year Social Work and Social Administration student, Liu Mengdie, said that students since the capping ceremony should be more independent, brave, and take social responsibility.

Second-year Finance student, Huang Xuhua, said that becoming an adult is related to age, physical changes as well as mental maturity. As a result, the students will feel proud and feel more responsible. She also spoke to the parents that students will take care of themselves and strive to become those who could contribute to society.
