UIC held the launching ceremony of campus domestic waste classification on 25 November. Student representatives introduced the changes brought about by waste sorting on campus. UIC will begin to implement waste sorting in an all-round way and strive to become a model campus in the Zhuhai Hi-tech Zone.
At the launching ceremony, Deputy Director of the Construction and Environmental Protection Bureau of Zhuhai Hi-tech Zone, Shen Yang, stated in her speech that UIC is the first university in the hi-tech zone to hold a launching ceremony about waste classification.

Party Secretary of the College Party Committee and Vice President (Administration), Prof Mao Yaqing, said that students can develop a good living habit as well as striving for UIC to become a model campus for waste sorting measures.

At present, UIC has carried out waste classification promotion throughout the college. The campus has realized full coverage of waste classification facilities. According to the actual situation of waste generated in the student living area, it is classified as food waste, hazardous waste, residual waste, and recyclables.

At the ceremony, UIC also hired more than 30 waste sorting student supervisors. They will be on duty at different periods in the dormitory.

Yu Siyun, a second-year Environmental Science student, said that some students had a vague definition of waste classification and had failed to implement it correctly. She hopes that everyone can become familiar with it as soon as possible with the help of the waste sorting supervisors so that the knowledge of waste sorting can be more common on campus, and all students in the college can take responsibility.

Waste classification knowledge
Waste classification generally refers to a series of activities in which waste is classified, stored, and transported according to specific regulations or standards, and thereby transformed into public resources. The waste is divided into four categories: food waste, recyclables, hazardous waste, and residual waste.
Food waste

Food waste refers to food waste and other organic matters. It includes household food waste, kitchen waste, as well as small branches, flowers, and leaves etc.
Recyclables
Recyclables refer to waste that is suitable for recycling and resource utilization, including paper products, plastic products, glass products, textiles, metals, household appliances, etc.
Hazardous waste

Hazardous waste refers to waste that is hazardous and requires special safe treatment, including household chemicals that can cause direct or potential harm to human health or the natural environment.
Residual waste
Residual waste refers to waste other than recyclables, kitchen waste, and hazardous waste.
